Public Works Department
The Department is comprised of six divisions, Engineering, Building, Planning, Fire Marshal, Highway & Grounds, and the Water Pollution Control Facility. These divisions are responsible for the design, planning, inspection and maintenance of the Towns existing and future, infrastructure, including but not limited to roadways, storm drainage, sanitary sewer system, open space, public parks, residential, commercial and public buildings. The majority of the Capital Improvement Projects are overseen by the Department of Public Works. The Department maintains and updates its inventory of Town owned facilities, such as right of ways, sanitary sewers, storm drainage and open space parcels on a regular basis.
The responsibility of this Department is to provide to the citizens, professional and courteous advice on issues ranging from home/property improvement questions, drainage concerns, sanitary sewer locations, tree locations, leaf collection and snow plowing. The Departments personnel strive to provide the highest level of service, consistently and effectively, to its citizens.

Engineering Department
The Engineering Division's mission is to design, review, and inspect public works projects to ensure public safety, improve and maintain the quality of life. The Engineering Division provides technical support to all Town government departments, boards, commissions and the general public. This support includes survey, design, review, and construction administration of a variety of public works projects. The Department additionally reviews and inspects improvements constructed by developers.

Building Department
The Building Department is responsible for the protection of persons in all public and private structures through its inspection programs. Areas of inspection include general construction, electric, plumbing, heating/air-conditioning and fire safety. The department staff also reviews specifications and engineering data for special structural, mechanical, energy and fire suppression.

Fire Marshal's Office
The Fire Marshal's office is responsible for review for fire code compliance, investigation of fire incidents for cause and origin, hazardous materials investigations and fire safety education.

Planning & Zoning

Water Pollution Control
The Farmington Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) is a regional wastewater treatment facility designed to provide advanced secondary treatment of incoming wastewater. The Farmington WPCF receives and treats wastewater from the towns of Farmington/Unionville, Avon, Canton, and Burlington Connecticut. The collection system encompasses approximately 150 miles and utilizes 17 pumping stations. Total gallons treated for 2003 was 1.65 billion gallons. The water after treatment is discharged to the Farmington River. The minimum required pollutant removal rate is 85%; the ten-year average is approximately 95% removal rate. The bio-solids are composted on-site and marketed in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts.

Highway & Grounds
The mission of the Highway and Grounds Department is the construction and maintenance of the town roadways, parks, and Westwoods golf course. These duties include seasonal maintenance such as plowing snow, leaf collection, and highway and park construction. This department also handles waste collection, recycling and tree maintenance.
