Farmington Recreation's Youth Basketball Leagues, sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, for children in grades 1 - 8 will meet November/December through early March. Registration for 2017 - 2018 (Grades 1 - 8) Youth Basketball is now closed.  For more information on our youth basketball leagues, please contact Geoffrey Porter, Recreation Supervisor at PorterG@Farmington-CT.org or Ryan Deneen, Program Assistant at DeneenR@Farmington-CT.org.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Recreation Basketball:  Grade 1 - COED

  • Boys and Girls in Grades 1 play with a 27.5” Basketball.
  • Our 1st Grade "Junior" Basketball Program is an introduction to the game of basketball.  Clinic-like sessions will focus on the development of basic skills (dribbling, shooting, etc.) and the team concept.
  • The 1st Grade "Junior" Basketball Program will take place on Saturdays (Time TBD).

Recreation Basketball:  Grades 2 & 3

  • General Rules for Grades 2 & 3
    • Boys and Girls in Grades 2 & 3 will play with a 27.5” Basketball.
    • Zone Defense will not be permitted.
    • Double-Team will not be permitted.
    • Stealing off of the dribble will not be permitted.
    • Full-Court-Press will not be permitted.
  • One hour practices are held once per week and are determined by our volunteer coaches and based on the space that we have available to us.  Specific requests for practices dates and times will not be accepted.
  • Games (4, 8-minute quarters) are played on Saturdays at random times between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Specific schedules will be available 1 - 2 weeks prior to the first game.
    • Please note that some teams may play away games versus towns such as Avon, Burlington or Canton. 
  • Farmington Recreation staff determines a players team placement based on a number of factors including but not limited to the players home address, the school that the player attends and the number of registrations received.  Specific requests for team placement will not be accepted.

Recreation Basketball:  Grade 4

  • General Rules for Grade 4
    • Boys and Girls in Grade 4 will play with a 27.5” Basketball.
    • Zone and Man-to-Man Defense will be permitted.
    • Double-Team will not be permitted.
    • Full-Court-Press will only be permitted by one player during the last two minutes of each half. Teams shall not press if up by more than 10 points.
  • One hour practices are held once per week and are determined by our volunteer coaches and based on the space that we have available to us.  Specific requests for practices dates and times will not be accepted.
  • Games (4, 10-minute quarters) are played on Saturdays at random times between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Specific schedules will be available 1 - 2 weeks prior to the first game.

Recreation Basketball:  Grades 5 & 6

  • General Rules for Grades 5 & 6
    • Boys in Grades 5 & 6 and Girls in Grades 5 & 6 play with an Intermediate Sized (28.5") Basketball.
    • NFHS basketball rules shall apply unless otherwise noted, with exception to the following.
      • Full-Court-Press will only be permitted by one player during the last two minutes of each half. Teams shall not press if up by more than 10 points.
      • Three-Second-Rule:  Verbal warnings shall be given for the first offense.  Upon a second offense stoppage of play will occur, which will result in a turnover.
  • One hour practices are held once per week and are determined by our volunteer coaches and based on the space that we have available to us.  Specific requests for practices dates and times will not be accepted.
  • Games (4, 10-minute quarters) are played on Saturdays at random times between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Specific schedules will be available 1 - 2 weeks prior to the first game.

  • Our volunteer coaches determine a players team placement based on a draft following a brief player evaluation night.  Specific requests for team placement will not be accepted.

    • Girls in Grades 7 & 8 play with an Intermediate Sized (28.5") Basketball.

Travel Basketball:  Grades 4/5 - 8

  • General Rules for Travel Basketball
    • Boys in Grades 6 - 8 play with an Official Sized (29.5”) Basketball
    • Boys in Grades 4 - 5 play with an Intermediate Sized (28.5") Basketball.
    • Girls in Grades 5 - 8 play with an Intermediate Sized (28.5") Basketball.
    • NFHS basketball rules shall apply unless otherwise noted.
  • Practices are generally held twice per week and are determined by our volunteer coaches and based on the space that we have available to us.  Specific requests for practices dates and times may not be accepted.
  • Games are generally played on Saturdays and Sundays at times to be determined by the appropriate leagues.
