The Tax Office bills and collects special service charges for waste (garbage) collection and/or sewer usage. Special service bills are mailed at the end of June each year. These bills are due July 1st, payable IN FULL by the first business day of August. To avoid a penalty, payment must be postmarked, hand delivered or made online by the first business day of August. Payments made after the first business day of August will incur interest at the rate of 1.5% per month calculated back to the July 1st due date (interest charge in August is 3%; 1.5% for July, 1.5% for August).
WASTE (GARBAGE) COLLECTION:
The Town of Farmington provides waste collection to certain streets in town. Each house that receives this service is assigned one waste and one recycling cart. You may purchase additional carts (additional fees apply) and you may also opt out of the service by contacting the Highway and Grounds division at (860) 675-2550. If you construct a new home on a street that has waste collection and would like waste pick up, please contact Highway & Grounds to arrange for the service. Bulk waste pick up information can be found at Bulk Waste Collection
If your home or commercial building is connected to the Town of Farmington’s sewer system, you are charged annually for sewer usage. Residential properties are charged a flat rate per living unit. Commercial buildings are charged based on water consumption figures provided by the water company.
If I demolish my house, how do I discontinue the services?
For waste collection - you must contact Highway and Grounds at 860-675-2550 to have the carts picked up. Once that is done, we will receive notification and pro-rate (and refund, if applicable) any charges accordingly.
For sewer usage - once the demolition permit is pulled and the Building Official verifies in writing to our office that the structure was successfully taken down, we will pro-rate (and refund, if applicable) any charges accordingly.
I spend several months out of state. Do I have to pay a full year of service?Yes. Service is not pro-rated when the house or building is vacant.
