Conservation Commission

The Conservation Commission is responsible for promoting the development and conservation of natural resources, including water resources. The Commission reviews applications pending before the Town Plan and Zoning Commission that include properties owned by the Town, properties listed as future or existing open space in the Plan of Conservation and Development, or properties which are located along a ridgeline. The Commission's responsibilities also include the review of all significant land use applications for environmental impact. Additionally, the Conservation Commission is responsible for reviewing applications involving significant activity within wetlands areas.

Historic District Commission

The Historic District Commission is charged with promoting the educational, cultural, economic and general welfare of the Town through the preservation and protection of the distinctive characteristics of buildings and places associated with its history or indicative of a period or style of architecture. Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Agency

The Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency  regulates, through a permit system, the use of land within areas designated as "wetlands" or "watercourses". Wetlands are defined by State Statue as those soils which are poorly or very poorly drained and alluvial or floodplain in origin. Watercourses include all perennial or intermittent water bodies and waterways. Regulated activities include the removal or deposition of material, construction or placement of obstruction, alterations, including clear cutting, or pollution of wetlands or watercourses.

Planning & Zoning Commission

The Town Plan and Zoning Commission is responsible for guiding the physical growth of the community with due regard to the public's health, safety and welfare. The principal means of exercising control over development is through the administration of the Subdivision and Zoning Regulations which provide standards for land use and development consistent with the needs of the community. The Commission's recommendations for future land use throughout the Town is reflected in the Plan of Development, as updated in 2007 and adopted in February, 2008.

Zoning Board of Appeals

The Zoning Board of Appeals is primarily responsible for acting on requests for variances from the terms of the Zoning Regulations where a strict interpretation of the regulations would result in unnecessary hardship for a property owner. The Board also hears and decides upon appeals on alleged errors in any order or decision of the Zoning Enforcement Officer.

Economic Development Commission

The Town Of Farmington's Economic Development Commission is comprised of seven individuals, representing various business interests, who volunteer their time and carry out commission duties established by ordinance. Powers and duties of the Commission are to:

• Conduct research into the economic conditions and trends in the Town
• Make recommendations to the Town Manager and/or Town Council regarding action to improve its economic condition and development
• Seek to coordinate the activities of, and cooperate with, unofficial bodies organized to promote economic development
• With Town Council approval, prepare and distribute printed materials to further the economic development of Farmington.

Public EDC Commission meetings are generally held the second Wednesday of each month in the Town Council Chambers at 6:30 PM.
