Farmington Police Explorer Program

The Farmington Police Department has reorganized its Police Explorer Post and we are currently looking for youths to join the organization.

Police Explorers are youths 14 years of age or over, who have an interest in the law enforcement profession or who just want to be involved in the community.

Explorers receive training in the many interesting areas of police work, ride along with officers on patrol and provide community services such as traffic control.

The group meets twice per month and members are invited to attend a Police Explorer Academy for one week each summer.

For more information please email PDExplorers@farmington-ct.org or contact one of the following:

Car Seat Program

Four out of five car seats are installed incorrectly.

Connecticut SAFE KIDS provides car seat checks throughout the state, as well as fitting stations. Fitting stations exist in different locations throughout the state, mostly in police and fire departments.

The Farmington Police Department located at 319 New Britain Ave. is equipped with all of the needed materials to check child safety seats as well as certified patrol officers. Car seat checks are done only by appointment. Appointments are available Wednesdays 11a-2p. Please understand that our technicians are full time patrol officers, and that field emergencies can cause appointment cancellations.

Parents interested in having their car seats checked should call (860) 675-2400.

S.M.A.R.T. (Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer)

If you are a Farmington resident, you have probably seen the interesting device that the police department uses to assist in combating speeding vehicles and to remind daydreaming drivers to watch their speed.

The S.M.A.R.T. (Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer) can be used in neighborhoods, school zones, construction sites, dangerous areas, or any other appropriate location to help promote compliance with the speed limit.

The S.M.A.R.T. trailer is a portable, self-contained speed display unit that is towed to the desired location. It is left on the roadway to display speeds of oncoming vehicles on a highly visible LED (light emitting diode) display. A speed limit sign mounted on the unit reminds drivers what the actual speed limit is on the road that they are on.

The unit also has the capability to record the speed data and traffic counts to determine the need for speed enforcement in certain areas. Occasionally you might notice that the S.M.A.R.T. trailer appears to not be working, the system might be running in it's survey mode only. The trailer is still functioning properly at that mode.

If you live in Farmington and feel that you have a problem with speeding vehicles in your neighborhood, you are encouraged to contact the Farmington Police Department's Special Project Unit and request that the S.M.A.R.T. trailer be scheduled in your area.

You can do this by calling the Farmington Police Department at (860) 675-2400.
