Water Pollution Control
The Farmington Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) is a regional wastewater treatment facility designed to provide advanced secondary treatment of incoming wastewater. The Farmington WPCF receives and treats wastewater from the towns of Farmington/Unionville, Avon, Canton, and Burlington, Connecticut. The collection system encompasses over 150 miles of pipeline and utilizes 17 pumping stations. The yearly average flow for treatment is 1.5 billion gallons. The final effluent water is discharged to the Farmington River. The NPDES permit (National Discharge Elimination System) requires that the facility maintain a minimum of 85% removal of both biological/chemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS). Historical data shows a removal efficiency of greater than 96%. The bio-solids are dewatered and sent to the Metropolitan District Commission Facility in Hartford for incineration and disposal.
