NEWS RELEASE: 4/10/26 

Holiday Trash & Recycling Schedule:

The ONLY three (3) Holidays observed for Trash & Recycling pick-ups are:

  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year's Day

Pickup days will be delayed by one day, STARTING with the holiday. 

Bulky Waste Collection:

During the week of April 20-24, 2026, all Farmington residents who have trash collection paid through the Town's annual special service fee, are invited to leave their bulk items curbside the night before their regular collection day.  For further details, as well as rules and regulations, please visit:  Bulk Waste Collection 

Household Hazardous Waste/Electronics/Shredding:

2026 Household Hazardous Waste Collections for residents of participating towns (Avon, Canton, Farmington, Granby, Simsbury, and Suffield):

  • April 25, 2026 at Farmington High School, 10 Monteith Drive, Farmington, CT.
  • June 13, 2026 at Simsbury Public Works Facility, 66 Town Forest Road, Simsbury, CT. 
  • October 10, 2026 at Simsbury Public Works Facility, 66 Town Forest Road, Simsbury, CT.

Used Motor Oil Update as of 1/13/23:

Effective January 23, 2023, the Town of Farmington Highway will begin accepting used motor oil again from Farmington and Unionville residents.

Rules/regulations:

  • Used motor oil will only be accepted from Farmington or Unionville residents.
  • Drop off location will be at Farmington Highway & Grounds, located at 544 New Britain Avenue, Unionville, however, you must go to the Highway Office to show a photo ID first.  If you own property in Farmington but do not have a Farmington address on your ID, please bring a copy of your tax bill.
  • Hours of drop off:  Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 12 noon (no holidays).
  • Motor oil must be dropped off in a sealed container no larger than 5 gallons.  We cannot empty your containers so please be sure to bring your used motor oil in a container that can be left.
  • Any motor oil left without prior approval from the Highway Office will be considered illegal dumping and subject to fines.  Cameras having been installed in various locations.

 Tunxis Mead Compost Area - Tunxis Mead Road, Farmington:

Normal Hours of operation:  The Tunxis Mead Compost Area is open year-round on Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, weather permitting.

Effective Saturday, March 28, 2026:  The Tunxis Mead Compost Area will be open on Saturdays as well as Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, weather permitting.

Trash & Recycling Collection Reminders:

  • Trash and Recycling Carts must be placed at the curbside the night before your normal pickup day or you may run the risk of missing your pickup and will have to wait until your next scheduled pickup day.
  • Bears and other wild animals are everywhere - be sure to clean carts regularly with disinfectant cleaner and attach Febreze or Airwicks stick-ups under the inside of the lid to deter animals.
  •  There are only (3) holidays observed for the trash and recycling schedule:  Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.  Pickup days will be delayed by one (1) day, starting with the holiday. 
  • No bulk items, construction debris, hazardous materials, flammable materials, grass clippings, branches, or lawn debris in carts.  
  •  Do not overstuff carts and break down larger items so they will not get hung up in the cart. 
  • No plastic bags in recycling carts.
